Anthropic Expands Claude with Massive AMD AI GPU Deal Worth Up to 2 Gigawatts of Computing Power

Fundacion Rapala – Anthropic has announced a major deal with AMD to expand the computing power behind Claude. The agreement could reach a total capacity of 2 gigawatts. This makes it one of the largest planned AI projects in the industry. The first stage will use 1 gigawatt of power. It is expected to begin in the first half of 2027. After that, Anthropic plans to increase the system to 2 gigawatts. The company did not reveal the exact number of chips involved. However, the scale suggests that it may require hundreds of thousands of AI processors. Therefore, the deal shows how quickly demand for Claude is growing. It also proves that strong hardware has become essential for AI companies that want to stay competitive.

AMD Instinct MI450 Chips Will Power the New System

The new platform will use AMD Instinct MI450 Series accelerators. These chips will run inside AMD’s Helios rack-scale systems. The platform is designed for large AI workloads and complex model training. In addition, it can connect many processors inside one large data center. This helps companies handle more users and larger models. Anthropic chose the system because Claude needs stable and powerful computing resources. Modern AI platforms require more than GPUs alone. They also depend on CPUs, storage, networking, and cooling systems. As a result, the agreement covers a full computing platform rather than a simple chip purchase. This approach could help Anthropic improve speed, reliability, and long-term performance as Claude continues to grow.

Two Gigawatts Shows the Huge Scale of the Project

A 2-gigawatt AI system represents an enormous level of computing power. However, this figure does not refer only to GPU use. Data centers also need electricity for storage, servers, cooling, and network equipment. Even so, the total capacity still shows the size of Anthropic’s plan. Reports suggest that 2 gigawatts can match the power use of hundreds of thousands of homes. Therefore, the project will require major infrastructure and careful energy planning. It may also need a very large number of AI accelerators. Anthropic has not shared that number yet. Still, the deal clearly shows how much computing demand has increased. As AI models become more advanced, companies must build larger systems to train and operate them.

Rising Demand for Claude Drives the Expansion

Claude has gained more users across business, research, and software development. As a result, Anthropic needs more computing capacity to handle daily demand. New AI models also require more power during training. In addition, they need strong systems to answer users quickly. Without enough hardware, performance may slow down during busy periods. Therefore, the new AMD deal is important for Claude’s future growth. Anthropic wants to support more customers while improving model quality. The deal also shows how fierce the AI hardware race has become. For years, Nvidia has held a strong position in the market. However, companies are now looking for more options. AMD has become one of the main alternatives for large AI systems. Anthropic’s decision could strengthen AMD’s role in the industry. It may also encourage other companies to use different chip suppliers. At the same time, AI firms want to reduce their dependence on one source.
