7 Major Upgrades in GPT-5, ChatGPT’s Most Powerful AI Yet
Fundacion Rapala – OpenAI has officially released GPT-5, its most advanced artificial intelligence model, replacing GPT-4 on the ChatGPT platform. Starting Friday (August 8, 2025), all users—including free-tier users—can access and experience GPT-5 directly. Claimed to be the smartest, fastest, and most helpful model OpenAI has ever built, GPT-5 brings significant improvements in speed, accuracy, reasoning, and safety.
Smarter Than Ever — On Par with PhD Experts
GPT-5 is engineered to respond with the proficiency of a subject-matter expert, similar to someone with a PhD. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, this is the first time their flagship model truly feels like you’re consulting a doctoral-level professional. It achieved top scores in academic benchmarks across math, science, and programming domains, making it a reliable tool for both casual users and specialists.

Faster Responses with Deep Reasoning Intact
One common criticism of GPT-4 was its slower response time during complex reasoning tasks. With GPT-5, this has been significantly improved. Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT, emphasized that GPT-5 retains its ability to think deeply while delivering faster answers. Whether answering simple queries or conducting in-depth analysis, GPT-5 provides a smoother and more efficient user experience.
Fewer Hallucinations and Increased Accuracy
Hallucination—when the AI confidently delivers inaccurate information—has been a challenge in previous versions. GPT-5 addresses this with a major leap in accuracy. Olivier Godement, Head of Platform at OpenAI, noted that GPT-5 hallucinates far less, especially in open-ended and complex queries. Moreover, the model can now recognize when it doesn’t have enough information and will say so honestly, rather than fabricating an answer.
Honest and Transparent Communication
In addition to reducing hallucinations, GPT-5 has been trained to avoid guessing when context is missing. If a user asks, “What do you think of this file?” without uploading anything, GPT-5 will prompt the user to provide the document instead of assuming content. This level of honesty enhances trust, safety, and usability, especially in high-stakes scenarios like legal or financial advice.
Enhanced Safety for Sensitive Prompts
GPT-5 introduces a new feature called safe completions that ensures secure responses to prompts involving sensitive or potentially dangerous information. For instance, if asked about explosives or toxic chemicals, GPT-5 will explain general concepts without diving into hazardous technical details. Alex Beutel, OpenAI’s Safety Research Lead, emphasized that this upgrade helps make GPT-5 not only smarter but also more responsible.
Superior Coding and Medical Capabilities
When it comes to software development, GPT-5 stands out as OpenAI’s most capable coding assistant to date. It can generate full-stack applications, manage API calls, and even design user interfaces. In healthcare, GPT-5 was evaluated using HealthBench, a medical benchmark designed by doctors, and scored the highest among all OpenAI models. However, OpenAI reminds users that GPT-5 is not a substitute for licensed medical professionals.
Massive Context Limit and Developer Flexibility
GPT-5 doubles the context window from GPT-4 Turbo’s 128,000 tokens to 256,000 tokens. That means the model can process the equivalent of 200,000+ words in a single interaction—ideal for long documents, large-scale codebases, and multi-step discussions. Developers can also choose between three GPT-5 variants: GPT-5 Standard, GPT-5 Mini, and GPT-5 Nano, depending on their performance and budget needs. Additionally, developers can control how deeply the model should “think” before responding, balancing speed with depth.
Free Access for All ChatGPT Users
Starting today, all ChatGPT users—including those on the free plan—can try GPT-5 and GPT-5 Mini. While usage limits may apply, OpenAI has not disclosed exact quotas, suggesting they may vary with user demand. Free users will automatically access GPT-5 until they hit their quota, after which they’ll switch to GPT-5 Mini.
Paid users on ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) will enjoy higher usage limits, while Pro users ($200/month) will get unlimited access—including to GPT-5 Pro. Subscribers to Team ($30/month or $240/year), Enterprise (custom pricing), and EDU plans will gain access to GPT-5 Pro in the coming days.
