Fireworks Festival Sparks Fire in Japan, Crew Jumps into the Sea
Fundacion Rapala – On Monday night, August 4, 2025, a fire broke out during the Minato Mirai Smart Festival in Yokohama, Japan. The blaze started when two fireworks barges caught fire, disrupting the summer celebration. Organizers confirmed that the fire injured one person, who received medical attention shortly afterward.
Crew Members Jumped into the Sea to Escape Danger
The Third Regional Coast Guard Headquarters reported that flames engulfed two of the eight fireworks barges at around 7:50 PM local time. One barge carried five crew members, who immediately jumped into the sea to escape. Rescuers quickly pulled them to safety and rushed one injured crew member to the hospital.
Organizers Cancel the Show Following the Incident
Event staff halted the show after the fire erupted. The organizers had planned to launch around 20,000 fireworks over 25 minutes starting at 7:30 PM, but they canceled the display to prioritize safety.
Festival Hosts Issue Public Apology and Launch an Investigation
In a public statement, the festival organizers said, “We will investigate the cause thoroughly. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.” They expressed regret and pledged to strengthen safety measures in the future.
Minato Mirai Smart Festival: A Yokohama Summer Highlight
Yokohama launched the Minato Mirai Smart Festival (MMSF) in 2018 as a key summer attraction. The event features synchronized fireworks and music, live performances, and activities involving the local community. The festival draws thousands of attendees each year.
Thousands Expected, But Safety Now Under Scrutiny
The Japan Food Guide described the venue as a premium location in central Minato Mirai, a top Yokohama tourist destination. While many spectators pay for special seating, others gather nearby for a glimpse of the breathtaking show. Despite the excitement, this year’s fire has raised concerns about firework safety and barge operations.
